Such was the hidden power of nature, capable of producing extreme beauty and cruelty at the same time.

About This Quote

In this quote from Aeschylus, the ancient Greek playwright, he refers to nature as a living force. In other words, nature is a being that is capable of both beauty and cruelty at the same time. His use of the word “capable” in this context is a bit different than the way we think of it today, but it is a very effective use of language. The ancient Greeks were capable of describing many things in terms of motion and motionless at the same time.

They had no problem describing things that went up and down or side to side at the same time. In other words, they had no problem describing things moving in one direction and not moving in another direction at the same time. It didn’t mean that something was actually going up or down or side to side.

Instead, it meant that they could use their imagination to see two different things happening at the same time. They were capable of seeing two things happening at once without changing either one into a noun.
